When veteran running back Willis McGahee was released last week, the Denver Broncos made a clear statement.

They like their young running backs.

‘Aztec For Life’ Ronnie Hillman is one of those young backs, and he is expected to see an increased role in 2013. The second-year pro Hillman and rookie Montee Ball have seen the most action in team activities so far this offseason, and both are fiercely competing for the starting job.

Hillman appeared on NFL Total Access yesterday and talked about the competition for the starting job, the pressure of playing with future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning, and his goals of having a career similar to those of San Diego legends Marshall Faulk and LaDainian Tomlinson.

Former San Diego State offensive lineman and ‘Aztec For Life’ Nik Embernate has been signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The 6-foot-4, 300-pound offensive lineman went undrafted, but was quickly signed by the Steelers as an undrafted free agent.

Embernate was a four-year starter for the Aztecs at right guard and will bring his physical, hard-nosed style of play to Pittsburgh to compete for a roster spot. His experience in college will surely bode well for him at the next level, as San Diego State frequently utilized him as a pulling guard in the “power” running play, a play often used in the NFL.

Congratulations to Nik!

Former San Diego State quarterback and ‘Aztec For Life’ Ryan Katz has been signed by the Denver Broncos.

The 6-foot-1, 210 pound quarterback went undrafted, but was quickly signed by Denver as an undrafted free agent.

After transferring to SDSU from Oregon State, Katz had an impressive 2012 campaign but had his season cut short due to an ankle injury. He will now compete for a roster spot and ultimately a chance to learn under perennial All-Pro quarterback Peyton Manning.

Congratulations to Ryan!
