Meet the Aztecs: Q&A with Kwayde Miller

The tenth in a daily series of Q&A’s with the 2012 signing class.

Kwayde Miller is a 6-foot-7, 305-pound offensive lineman from Ramona, Calif. He was a standout lineman at Ramona High School, and was named to the 2011 Cal-Hi Sports all-state football team for his efforts during his senior season. Miller player tight end early on in his career, but eventually moved to offensive line before his junior year. He also played basketball and was on the track and field team.

Miller was heavily recruited out of high school, and chose San Diego State over other big programs around the country. He has a big frame and has the potential to be a solid offensive tackle for the Aztecs. His background as a tight end and experience playing basketball gives him unique athleticism to go along with his size. He will wear No. 75 for SDSU.

Q: Why did you choose SDSU?
A: It’s close to home so I can have my family support. When I came on campus I got the vibe that this is it and this is place I want to be.

Q: How were the summer workouts for you?
A: They were tough but they went well.

Q: Have you picked your major yet?
A: I haven’t picked a major yet but I’m leaning towards criminal justice. I might want to do something involved with the CIA or FBI.

Q: What are you most excited for leading up to your first semester at San Diego State?
A: I’m excited for the campus life and first football game.

Q: What do you like to do during your spare time?
A: I like to hang out with friends, go to the beach and play video games.

Q: Who are your favorite professional sports teams?
A: I don’t really have a favorite professional sports team. I just like to follow players.

Q: Is there any athlete that you look up to or try to model your game after?
A: I like Jake Long. I like to follow the Dolphins a little bit so I can watch him play.

Q: If you weren’t a football player, what sport would you be playing?
A: I would probably be playing basketball. I played all four years in high school but once I started gaining weight I focused more on football.

Q: What is your most memorable sports moment from high school?
A: I would say scoring three touchdowns my freshman year. It was my first time playing football and I was playing tight end.

Q: What was it like growing up in Ramona?
A: There was small-town environment and I liked that. We also had a great environment for football games on Friday nights. The whole town would come out to support the football team.

The fifth in a daily series of Q&A’s with the 2012 signing class.

Austin Maass is a 6-foot-4, 270-pound offensive lineman from Mission Viejo, Calif. He had a very successful career at Mission Viejo High School, which is consistently one of the top high school football programs in the state. Maass was a two-time All-CIF and all-state offensive guard in high school.

Maass joins four other offensive lineman in the 2012 signing class. He and the others will be counted on following the 2012 season, as there are currently four seniors on the offensive line who will leave the program after this year.

Maass had ties to San Diego State even before joining the team, as his uncle attended the school and his brother is currently enrolled. He will wear No. 74 for the Aztecs.

Q: Why did you choose SDSU?
A: I chose San Diego State because it’s pretty close to home and it was a good fit for me. I felt comfortable here.

Q: How were the summer workouts for you?
A: They were pretty rough, but it’s what I expected and it’s nothing I can’t handle. It’s definitely a lot of hard work.

Q: Have you picked your major yet?
A: I haven’t picked a major yet. I’m still undeclared but I’m leaning towards journalism.

Q: What are you most excited for leading up to your first semester at San Diego State?
A: I’m definitely most excited for the first game against Washington. Hopefully I’ll get to travel up there with the team and see what it’s like. That would be a really cool experience for me.

Q: What do you like to do during your spare time?
A: I like to go fishing during my spare time. I actually went with Seamus (McMorrow) and it was really fun. I like riding my skateboard around too.

Q: Who are your favorite professional sports teams?
A: I’m partial to the Los Angeles Clippers. I also like the Oakland Raiders.

Q: Is there any athlete that you look up to or try to model your game after?
A: I look up to Michael Phelps. I like his work ethic and how he gets the job done.

Q: If you weren’t a football player, what sport would you be playing?
A: I would be playing baseball. I played designated hitter in high school.

Q: What was it like coming from a very successful high school program like Mission Viejo?
A: It was definitely a good feeling being able to win a lot. Hopefully it will carry over here and we can win a lot of games here. I want to carry the winning attitude and mentality here.

Q: What is your most memorable sports moment from high school?
A: My most memorable sports moment was when I hit my 13th home run my freshman year and set the freshman record for my high school.

Meet the Aztecs: Q&A with Lloyd Mills

The third in a daily series of Q&A’s with the 2012 signing class.

Lloyd Mills is a 5-foot-10, 165 pound wide receiver from Chander, Ariz. Mills comes to San Diego State after a very successful high school career at Chandler High School, where he was named to the 2011 all-Arizona Division 1 team by the Arizona Republic for his efforts during his senior season. Mills was ranked the No. 18 wide receiver out of Arizona by MaxPreps.

Mills can be a game-changer both as a receiver and as a kickoff and punt returner. During his senior season at Chandler, three of his 11 touchdowns were on returns.

Not only did Mills excel on the field, but also in the classroom. He was a member of the National Honors Society and was a Distinguished Scholar.

Q: Why did you choose SDSU?
A: I chose SDSU because it was pretty close to home. I also liked the weather and the coaching staff. 

Q: How were the summer workouts for you?
A: They were tough, but I know it’s good for me and it will get me ready mentally.

Q: Have you picked your major yet?
A: I am going to major in criminal justice. I am interested in being a lawyer when I am done with football.

Q: What are you most excited for leading up to your first semester at San Diego State?
A: I’m excited for walking around campus and seeing new faces.

Q: What do you like to do during your spare time?
A: I like to play video games. I play Madden, Call of Duty, and NCAA Football all the time.

Q: Who are your favorite professional sports teams?
A: I like the Arizona Cardinals, the San Antonio Spurs, and the New York Yankees.

Q: Is there any athlete that you look up to or try to model your game after?
A: I’m a big fan of Larry Fitzgerald.

Q: If you weren’t a football player, what sport would you be playing?
A: I would be playing basketball, I played in high school.

Q: What are you most excited about getting to learn from Coach McDaniel?
A: He played with my receivers coach at my high school. When I found that out I knew he would be a good coach because my receivers coach helped me out a lot. I know he played in the NFL too so I’m excited to learn from him.

Q: What is your most memorable sports moment from high school?
A: Scoring a touchdown on ESPN. It was against our rival school Hamilton and there around 10,000 people there. It was crazy.
