Former San Diego State women’s soccer player and ‘Aztec For Life’ Megan Jurado was selected to the Philippine National Team last week. The Malditas team features 26 women and will compete to qualify for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The team will spend the next three weeks preparing for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup qualifiers in Dhaka, Bangladesh, held from May 21-25. Teams will compete for a chance to qualify for the 2014 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, where five teams can then advance to the 2015 Women’s World Cup in Canada.

Malditas is in Group B in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup qualifier and will face Iran on May 21, Thailand on May 23, and Bangladesh on May 25. The winner of the group will move on to the main draw of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup. The Malditas team is looking to become the first-ever Philippine team to qualify for a Women’s World Cup.

Jurado completed her career this past fall by leading her team to a 21-2-1 record (7-0 MW) and helping it win the Mountain West regular-season and tournament championships. In arguably the best season in school history, the Aztecs advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. Jurado led the team in goals (15), assists (9) and points (39) and was named the MW Offensive Player-of-the-Year and an All-American selection.

Congratulations to Megan!

Former San Diego State offensive lineman and ‘Aztec For Life’ Nik Embernate has been signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The 6-foot-4, 300-pound offensive lineman went undrafted, but was quickly signed by the Steelers as an undrafted free agent.

Embernate was a four-year starter for the Aztecs at right guard and will bring his physical, hard-nosed style of play to Pittsburgh to compete for a roster spot. His experience in college will surely bode well for him at the next level, as San Diego State frequently utilized him as a pulling guard in the “power” running play, a play often used in the NFL.

Congratulations to Nik!

Former San Diego State quarterback and ‘Aztec For Life’ Ryan Katz has been signed by the Denver Broncos.

The 6-foot-1, 210 pound quarterback went undrafted, but was quickly signed by Denver as an undrafted free agent.

After transferring to SDSU from Oregon State, Katz had an impressive 2012 campaign but had his season cut short due to an ankle injury. He will now compete for a roster spot and ultimately a chance to learn under perennial All-Pro quarterback Peyton Manning.

Congratulations to Ryan!
