Although San Diego State football has struggled with attendance numbers in years past, one fan can always be counted on to consistently bring energy and enthusiasm to Qualcomm Stadium.

That fan is Chet Carney.

A graduate of San Diego State, Carney has been one of the most animated and supportive Aztec fans over the last few decades. He can typically be found on the field at Aztec football games, cheering on the players and even starting chants with the crowd.

He is also a huge supporter of Aztec basketball, men and women. He is often one of the loudest fans in Viejas Arena, and his spirit is greatly appreciated by players, coaches, and other fans.

For his continued support of Aztec sports, Chet Carney is this week’s Wednesday Warrior.

Aztec Stat of the Week: Interceptions

In case you missed Saturday’s game, sophomore sensation Derek Largent was all over the field vs. Colorado State. Although he typically provides pressure in the backfield and harasses the passer, he found himself making plays in coverage for a change.

Largent had two interceptions in the game, the first two of his career, and nearly had three after he was close to grabbing another just before the half.

So what is the San Diego State football record for most interceptions in a game and in a season?

To find these stats, you have to dig deep into the SDSU archives, so deep that pictures are nowhere to be found.

Most interceptions in a game

In 1949, defensive back Dick Adair snagged four interceptions in a game against New Mexico State. This 63-year old record is one shy of the all-time NCAA record of five interceptions in a game (achieved by five different players).

Most interceptions in a season

In the 1951 season, defensive back Ed Ricketts intercepted 12 passes, setting a record that no other Aztec has come close to. The next highest total is eight by Tom Deckert in 1969, and the closest in recent years occurred in the 2011 season when cornerback Larry Parker picked off seven passes.
