SDSU vs. Air Force: Women’s basketball preview

After securing at least a share of the Mountain West regular-season title last week, the San Diego State women’s basketball team looks to win the conference outright as it travels to Air Force tonight. The Aztecs (22-5, 13-1) defeated the Falcons (4-23, 3-11) handily in the previous meeting, notching a 68-46 victory at Viejas Arena.

In the midst of a 13-game win streak, San Diego State is arguably one of the hottest teams in the country. Behind the stellar play of seniors Chelsea Hopkins and Courtney Clements, the Aztecs are now receiving votes in both the AP rankings and the USA Today coaches poll.

Be sure to keep an eye on head coach Beth Burns and her team this month as they attempt to continue their win streak and keep the momentum going into postseason play.

Tonight’s game tips off at 7 p.m. MT (6 p.m. PT). Although it is not televised, Chris Ello will hold a live audio webcast available on GoAztecs.com.

SDSU vs. Air Force: Men’s basketball senior night

Tonight is a special night for the San Diego State basketball program.

The Aztecs will pay respect to six student-athletes before the game, all of whom are playing at Viejas Arena for the last time in their collegiate careers. Tonight’s Senior Night ceremony will honor the following student-athletes:

Chase Tapley
James Rahon
DeShawn Stephens
Narbeh Ebrahimian
Jeremy Castleberry
Aaron Douglass

San Diego State (20-8, 8-6) will take on Air Force (17-11, 7-7) at 8:30 p.m. Although it is a late start, all Aztec fans should do their best to attend in order to support to these six ‘Aztecs For Life’ and the rest of the team as the season winds down.

Beyond the ceremony, tonight’s game is an important game as San Diego State gears up for the NCAA tournament. The Aztecs need all the momentum they can get heading into the postseason. The Falcons defeated San Diego State 70-67 in the previous meeting.

Aztecs in the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine: Leon McFadden

Arm length: 32 3/8″
Hand size: 9″

40-yard dash: 4.54 seconds, 23rd*
3-cone drill: 6.81 seconds, 7th*
20-yard shuttle: 4.27 seconds, 21st*
Vertical jump: 34.5 inches, 21st*
Broad jump: 119 inches, 21st*
Bench press: 10 reps, 24th*

Analysis
In last week’s preview, I said that if McFadden can beat the average 40-yard dash time of cornerbacks in the combine over the last five years, he will put himself in position to be drafted in the third or fourth round.

McFadden did just that on Tuesday, although he was a bit closer than he would have liked. McFadden recorded a time of 4.54, just one-hundredth of a second below the 5-year average of 4.55.

McFadden’s 40-time, along with an impressive performance in the defensive back drills, gave scouts closure on his skill-set. They know he can play – countless amounts of game film and a strong week of practice at the Senior Bowl supports that, they just wanted to make sure he would run an above-average time at the combine.

With his performance at the combine, McFadden has likely maintained his mid-round projection. If he can run a sub-4.5 40-yard dash at his pro day on March 19, however, don’t be surprised if some teams consider taking him earlier.
