SDSU Women’s Lacrosse: Ahead of Schedule

Kylee White coaches

When a Division 1 athletic team is first introduced, the first few years are typically rough.

Blowout losses, recruiting struggles, team chemistry issues – all of these are common.

The San Diego State women’s lacrosse team must have missed that memo.

Although their first year had its fair share of growing pains, head coach Kylee White and the Aztecs are off to an incredible start in just their second season of existence. With an 8-4 record and several marquee wins, these ladies are proving that they are not to be taken lightly.

Despite its youth – one senior, four juniors, 14 sophomores and 11 freshmen – San Diego State has exceeded the expectations of many.

The Aztecs were picked to finish seventh in the 2012 Mountain Pacific Spots Federation Preseason Poll. They tied for fifth place with a 5-10 record.

In this season’s MPSF Preseason Poll, the Aztecs were predicted to finish fifth, and they are on pace to place higher than predicted once again. They are currently tied for third place with a 3-1 record in conference play.

Oregon, who was predicted to finish second in the MPSF, learned first-hand that San Diego State is a team on the rise. The Aztecs traveled to Oregon on March 22 and defeated the Ducks on their home field, 12-10.

San Diego State also has its fair share of blowout victories this season, a clear indicator of the team’s rapid improvement. After winning just one game by double digits in 2012, the Aztecs have already tallied five lopsided wins this season.

In just their second game this season, they trampled Stetson University in Florida, 18-1. Think that’s impressive? They outdid themselves a few weeks later, demolishing Long Island University – Brooklyn by a score of 21-1. Four days later, they added a dominating 19-5 victory over Marquette to their resume.

Additionally, San Diego State has two convincing wins over conference rivals Saint Mary’s and Fresno State, knocking off both by double digits.

Offensively, the Aztecs have been led by their deadly trio of attackers – junior Meris Walsh (25 goals) and sophomores Bailey Ewing (34 goals) and Michaela Jarvis (21 goals, 31 assists). San Diego State has established itself as one of the top scoring offenses in the county this season, and it currently ranks fifth in all of Division 1 women’s lacrosse with an average of 14.83 goals per game.

The Aztecs’ top midfielders have been junior Christina Ricciardulli (15 goals, 16 ground balls, 27 draw controls) and freshman Felice Artuso (13 goals, 12 ground balls, 32 draw controls). Defenders Madison Wallace (19 ground balls), Jade Jones (16 ground balls), Lauren Paul (12 ground balls) and Catherine Shepardson (11 ground balls), all sophomores, have also played an integral role for the young team. Goalkeeper Sammy Slattery, San Diego State’s lone senior, has recorded 87 saves and ranks 23rd in the country in save percentage (.458).

In conclusion, I have one question for all you Aztec fans: Have you made it out to a game yet?

If the answer is no, don’t worry. It’s perfect timing.

San Diego State takes on California (7-4, 4-0 MPSF) in a crucial conference battle at the Aztec Lacrosse Field this Sunday, April 14, at 12 p.m PST. Admission is free.

Get out there and support the Lady Aztecs!

2013 SDSU Spring Football Update: Week 2

Aztec fans,

With the second week of San Diego State’s spring football in the books, here are some newsworthy notes and things to keep an eye on:

Quarterback “competition”

Junior quarterback Adam Dingwell has likely secured his spot as the starter in 2013. (Ernie Anderson/SDSU Media Relations)

After promoting an open quarterback competition heading into spring football, it seems that head coach Rocky Long has already given returning starter Adam Dingwell the nod.

Dingwell has received a large majority of the first-team reps so far, and Long expects this trend to continue. Like I have said before, it is very unlikely that Dingwell is not the starter in 2013.

The coaches will now use the rest of spring practices to determine who they feel most comfortable with as the backup quarterback. I see this as a competition between Jake Bernards, Chad Jeffries, and Matt Morin, with Bernards ultimately earning the backup role due to his experience and knowledge of the system.

Surprise at tight end

After losing three tight ends, the Aztecs desperately needed someone to step up this spring, and sophomore Robert Craighead has done just that.

After being moved to the defensive line in 2012 because of the depth at tight end, Craighead was asked to move back to his original position. It was a smart move by the coaching staff, and Craighead has risen to the occasion with two solid weeks of practice.

With the emergence Craighead, I see the tight end position shaping up as follows:

Junior Adam Roberts and Craighead will see the most playing time in 2013. Sophomore Aaron Boesch, the most athletic option at the tight end position, will likely be used on special teams and in various passing situations. Either Dominique Bierria or incoming freshman David Wells will see playing time in 2013 as a special teams contributor and a reserve tight end.

Additional Notes

  • Cornerbacks J.J. Whittaker, Pierre Romain and Mahbu Keels have split time with the first-team defense. If Whittaker can stay healthy, I expect him and King Holder to be the starters in the 2013.
  • Sophomore Dan Kottman, who was Sam Meredith’s primary backup at defensive tackle in 2012, underwent surgery to repair a damaged shoulder. Although Kottman is expected to be healthy by the start of the season, look for junior Kenny Galea’i to step up as Meredith’s backup.
  • The Aztecs have still not found a backup running back to starter Adam Muema. I expect Chase Price and De’Saan Hardwick to separate themselves in the coming weeks, but the competition will likely last through fall camp.
  • Long has said that Bryce Quigley, Japheth Gordon and Zach Dilley have pretty much secured their starting spots at left tackle, left guard and center, respectively. Right guard Nico Siragusa and right tackle Terry Poole are currently working with the first-team offense.

That’s it for this week, Aztec fans. Stay tuned for more in-depth updates in the next two weeks, as I will be in San Diego from March 12-23 and will be able to attend some practices and the spring game.
